- Recognise dangerous or difficult terrain on map and ground.
- Plan and implement navigational strategies based on the above skills.
- Maintain route finding accuracy in poor visibility or darkness.
- Recognise a navigation error within a few minutes and apply appropriate relocation techniques.

Moray Pryde –
Went on a one day intermediate course and it was brilliant. Had a basic knowledge of map reading and compass skills but it was great for both to be explained and more importantly then put them into practice. Was a great day and would thoroughly recommend.
Sue Langsland –
Did intermediate navigation skills with Siôn yesterday and enjoyed it very much. Reminded me about compass skills I used to know, and also pacing and timing skills. I liked his teaching style and opportunities to practise skills to reinforce the learning (Facebook review from 19th August, 2019)
Jenny Wilson –
I attended an intermediate navigation skills day last Saturday, organised by Lothian & Borders Ramblers and run by Sion. The day flew by and was really useful – well structured and paced and a good balance between theory and practice with the afternoon spent outside in the Lammermuirs practising using a compass and the 5 ‘Ds’ of navigation. The weather even turned out to be ideal for practising navigation – increasingly wet, windy and misty! I learned a lot – now just have to keep practising…… (review on Facebook, 29th May, 2019)
